Itochu secures Singapore approval for ammonia bunkering trials in International Shipping News 02/06/2026 The trials will test technical readiness, operational protocols, and the infrastructure required to deliver ammonia as a marine fuel in Singapore. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) approved the project last month under its alternative marine fuels framework, with the authorisation taking effect on 15 May. The approval, awarded to ZETA Bunkering, Itochu’s Singapore-based bunkering arm, covers up to two years following reviews of safety, risk, and commercial plans. Itochu plans to conduct live ammonia bunkering demonstrations in the fourth quarter of 2027 using a dedicated bunker vessel being built by Sasaki Shipbuilding. The Singapore-flagged vessel is due for delivery in September 2027. The fuel will be supplied to dual-fuel Capesize bulk carriers jointly owned by CMB.TECH and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, with MOL serving as charterer. The demonstrations remain subject to further approvals. ITOCHU sees Singapore as a potential launchpad for expanding ammonia bunkering operations to other major bunker hubs globally.
