The labor market reading comes at a time when market participants and the Federal Reserve have largely turned their focus to inflation, amid surging oil prices due to the ongoing Middle East conflict. After some signs of cooling, U.S. job growth in general appears to have rebounded strongly since March, giving the Fed some space to focus on the inflationary shock emerging from the Iran war. The May nonfarm payrolls report due on Friday will give another major indication on the state of the labor market. According to ADP’s monthly report, private employers in the U.S. added 122k jobs in May, higher than the consensus estimate of 118k. “Hiring was more broad-based in May than we’ve seen in the last few years. The labor market continues to show sustained momentum going into the summer hiring season,” Nela Richardson, chief economist at ADP, said in a statement. Jobs rose in eight of the ten sub-sectors of the U.S. private industry as compiled by ADP, with only natural resources and mining and information seeing losses. Education and health services posted the biggest increase, with 57k jobs added in May. “Further proof the labor market is improving and will likely be a big story in H2 as this continues,” Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, noted on X.
