South Carolina Ports plans to expand ro-ro operations to its rail-served North Charleston Terminal to support growing automotive cargo demand. The SC Ports Board approved the project’s design contract, marking the first step in the expansion process. The project will increase ro-ro capacity at the Port of Charleston and support South Carolina’s automotive sector, while creating additional cargo opportunities for existing and new customers. Micah Mallace said the investment will help manufacturers maintain efficient and competitive supply chains. SC Ports acquired the adjacent former paper mill site in 2024. Demolition work will begin this summer. Construction to prepare the terminal for ro-ro operations is scheduled to start in 2027, with completion expected in 2028. The project includes rail upgrades and new ro-ro infrastructure. Rail services will be operated by Palmetto Railways . Current breakbulk and ro-ro operations are handled at Columbus Street Terminal, which can process more than 250,000 vehicles annually. The new expansion will free up additional capacity at Columbus Street Terminal for future cargo growth. According to the South Carolina Department of Commerce, the state accounted for 18% of completed passenger vehicle export sales in the United States.
