Contargo Rhein-Waal-Lippe officially accepted a new container gantry crane at the Port of Emmerich on 11 May, marking the completion of a major terminal modernisation project. The infrastructure upgrade was carried out by Port Emmerich – Infrastruktur- und Immobiliengesellschaft mbH over several years. The Emmerich terminal expanded by 12,000 sqm and underwent a full infrastructure upgrade, including new crane runways and the installation of the new gantry crane. The crane replaces aging equipment and aims to improve operational efficiency and sustainability. As a trimodal terminal, the Emmerich facility connects inland waterway, rail, and road transport, supporting regional and international cargo flows. Investment in the crane runway and gantry crane totaled around €12 million, while the overall infrastructure modernisation project reached approximately €20 million. The project received support under Germany’s funding programme for combined transport terminal infrastructure. Further expansion is already planned. Funding applications were submitted in 2022 to replace the terminal’s second gantry crane, which has reached the end of its operational life. Following positive feedback from the federal funding authority, Contargo aims to replace the second crane in 2028 to further strengthen terminal capacity and performance.
