Strait of Hormuz: Early pickup in vessel traffic even before ceasefire announcement in International Shipping News 09/04/2026 While the recently announced US–Iran ceasefire is too young to bear measaruble results just yet, our latest AIS-derived data shows early signs of a pickup in vessel activity at the Strait of Hormuz — starting as soon as April 1. Between 1–7 April, we recorded 84 confirmed crossings across dry bulk, tanker and gas carrier segments, up 75% from 48 crossings in the preceding week (25–31 March). As of this morning, a total of 1,441 merchant vessels are tracked across both sides of the strait, with 959 currently positioned west of Hormuz inside the Gulf. This is below the peak of 1,061 vessels recorded earlier in the disruption, but still represents a significant backlog. At the same time, AIS disruption remains elevated. Around 43% of vessels in the region are currently either not transmitting or broadcasting unreliable signals, compared to a pre-disruption baseline of ~17%.
