Inmarsat Maritime has received Cyber Security Type Approval from Bureau Veritas for its NexusWave connectivity service. The approval confirms that NexusWave has been assessed against the IACS Unified Requirement E27 (UR E27) for cyber security. It follows a similar ClassNK approval secured earlier this year. Bureau Veritas assesses NexusWave Bureau Veritas reviewed the security architecture and controls used by NexusWave. The assessment covered onboard ICT architecture, network equipment and orchestration processes. It also examined managed service edge infrastructure. The review considered how these components work together as one system. Inmarsat said the approval will help ship operators deploy NexusWave across fleets with different classification requirements. NexusWave combines multiple networks NexusWave is a managed maritime connectivity service that combines several network technologies. These include GEO, LEO, LTE and L-band connectivity . The networks are bonded into a single service to provide connectivity for vessel operations, corporate systems and crew use. Cyber security features include network segmentation, encryption and centrally managed security capabilities. Cyber requirements grow for connected vessels IACS UR E27 sets cyber resilience requirements for onboard systems and equipment. “Cyber resilience is becoming an increasingly important consideration as shipboard systems become more connected and digitally integrated,” said Christophe Chauviere, Marine & Offshore Technical & Operations Excellence Senior Vice-President at Bureau Veritas. Gert-Jan Panken, General Manager and Vice President at Inmarsat Maritime, said the approval would help customers meet evolving cyber security and classification requirements.
