MAMII reaction and interview opportunity: The absence of methane abatement within Europe’s Industrial Maritime Strategy is a strategic weakness in International Shipping News,Shipping: Emission Possible 06/03/2026 With today’s launch of the EU’s new European Industrial Maritime Strategy (EIMS), the Methane Abatement in Maritime Innovation Initiative (MAMII) and its Chair, Panos Mitrou, have provided a reaction to the announcement. Led by Safetytech Accelerator, established by Lloyd’s Register, MAMII is a coalition of shipping leaders, which aims to reduce the environmental impact of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in shipping while assisting the transition to future fuel solutions. While MAMII has welcomed the EIMS as a major step forward for shipping decarbonisation, it warns that methane emissions remain a critical blind spot that must be addressed if the strategy is to deliver its full climate impact. However, methane emissions from ships themselves remain under-recognised and are treated implicitly through fuel transition language and alternative fuel policy, rather than as a standalone climate risk requiring targeted action. “Technologies to accurately measure and remove methane emissions are proven and ready. The barrier to their implementation is policy, funding and regulatory clarity. With targeted support, these technologies could be scaled rapidly, delivering one of the fastest and most effective pathways to cut maritime emissions.
