U.S. proposes broad tariffs of at least 10% over forced-labor imports in World Economy News 04/06/2026 President Donald Trump’s administration on Tuesday proposed sweeping new tariffs of at least 10% on imports from 60 economies after finding that their failure to block goods made with forced labor unfairly harmed American businesses and workers. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) said investigations conducted under Section 301 of the Trade Act concluded that the economies’ policies regarding forced-labor imports were “unreasonable” and burdened U.S. commerce. “The failure of our most important trading partners to address the importation of goods made with forced labor is unacceptable,” said U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Under the proposal, countries that have implemented forced-labor import bans, committed to doing so under trade agreements, or operate partial restrictions would face additional duties of 10%. All other economies would be subject to tariffs of 12.5%. The investigations cover major U.S. trading partners including China, India, Japan, South Korea, Britain, Australia, Brazil and Vietnam, among others. The European Union, Canada, Mexico, Indonesia, and Pakistan were cited for failing to effectively enforce existing prohibitions. Greer said trading partners had not done enough to prevent the flow of goods produced with forced labor, creating unfair competition for American workers and companies. The USTR also proposed a textile mechanism allowing limited volumes of apparel and textile imports from certain economies to enter at reduced tariff rates. Public comments are due by July 6, with hearings scheduled for July 7. Source: Investing.com 2026-06-04 hellenicshippingnews... tweet Share
