Screengrab from X video posted by Marinha An Indian crew member arrested after Portuguese authorities seized five tonnes of cocaine from a Hong Kong-flagged container ship off Portugal was found dead in his cell in Lisbon on Wednesday, Aug. 5. The man was one of three foreign nationals arrested during Operation Skydrop. Portuguese authorities had intercepted the container ship about 640 nautical miles (1,185 km) off the Portuguese coast and later escorted it to the port of Sines. The cocaine was found hidden in void spaces on the ship. Portuguese authorities said the drugs were intended to be transferred at sea to other vessels before being taken to landing points along the Portuguese or Spanish coast. The circumstances surrounding the crew member’s death are under investigation. Portuguese media reported that he was believed to have died by hanging, but authorities have not confirmed the cause of death. The Directorate-General for Reintegration and Prison Services (DGRSP) said the man was being held alone in a cell at the prison facility next to the Judicial Police headquarters in Lisbon. Prison officers found him at about 8 a.m. during the morning opening of the cells and immediately called the emergency services through 112. Medical personnel arrived and confirmed his death. The body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine at 11:40 a.m. The DGRSP said the cell was closed after the discovery and the incident was reported to the Judicial Police. Officers from the Homicide Brigade examined the cell, while Public Security Police officers also attended and photographed the scene. RTP reported that there is no video surveillance inside the cells, although cameras monitor the corridors. The death is being investigated separately from the drug-trafficking case.
