U.S. trade deficit narrows in April as exports grow in World Economy News 10/06/2026 The U.S. trade balance narrowed in April, with exports growing more than imports, thanks to an uptick in the outflow of capital goods and industrial supplies. The trade deficit for the month sank by 1.2% to $55.9 billion, according to data from the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Economic Analysis on Tuesday. March figures, meanwhile, were revised lower to a deficit of $56.6 billion, versus an initial reading of $60.3 billion. Economists had anticipated that the trade deficit would stand at $56.20 billion in April. Exports of goods, in particular, increased by $8.7 billion to $221.3 billion during the month. The outflow of computers and civilian aircraft grew by $2.5 billion and $1 billion, respectively, while crude oil exports expanded by $6.4 billion. Goods imports, on the other hand, rose by $6.4 billion to $304.9 billion, driven largely by incoming items like computers, semiconductors, and telecommunications equipment, the BEA said. Over a three-month moving average, which aims to account for fluctuations in the monthly figure, exports increased by $9.1 billion and imports rose by $9.7 billion. Year-over-year, the average goods and services deficit fell by $47.6 billion versus the three months ending in April 2025. Trade weighed on U.S. economic output in the previous two quarters. “Although the trade deficit was little changed in April, our calculations suggest that gold-adjusted export volumes far outpaced import volumes. That leaves net trade on track to make an even stronger positive contribution to second-quarter GDP growth than we previously assumed,” analysts at Capital Economics said in a note.
