Fed’s Daly says weak jobs data raises labor market concerns in World Economy News 07/03/2026 Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco President Mary Daly said Friday that February’s disappointing employment report challenges the idea that the US labor market was stabilizing. “The hopes that the labor market was steadying, maybe that was too much, and we really have to keep our eye on the labor market,” Daly said in an interview on CNBC. US employers unexpectedly cut 92,000 jobs in February, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data released Friday. The unemployment rate rose to 4.4%. The results partly reflected disruptive winter weather and a decrease in health care employment due to strike activity. Daly cautioned that policymakers should not place too much emphasis on any single month of data and noted that details within the report make it difficult to interpret. The Fed official said the central bank continues to face risks on both sides of its mandate, pointing to inflation that has remained above the Fed’s 2% target for five years. “The piece I’m worried about is the labor market maybe a little weaker than we have seen so far, but I’ve been worried about that since last summer,” Daly said. The Fed kept interest rates unchanged at its January meeting. Investors expect the central bank to hold rates steady again when officials meet later this month.
