For all vessels, fire risks are a significant concern. Emergency preparedness is key to both fire prevention and mitigation. When vessels are docked in port, circumstances may escalate to a point where shoreside firefighters and their assets are needed to control and put out such fires. Many, if not all, shipboard safety management systems (SMSs) include fire related risks as part of their emergency preparedness plans and procedures. However, it is important for consideration to be given as to how the SMS’s procedures properly account for shoreside firefighters when applicable. Your Managers recommend that Members take note of this information and be guided accordingly.
