Adif aims to shift semi-trailer traffic from road to rail and strengthen freight links between the Port of Algeciras and inland Spain. Spain’s rail infrastructure manager Adif has started a €345 million programme to upgrade the Madrid-Algeciras rail corridor for the transport of semi-trailers by rail. According to Adif, the works are part of a wider investment programme worth more than €680 million . The project will create a rail motorway linking the Port of Algeciras , Madrid and Zaragoza. The corridor will allow road semi-trailers to travel on specialised rail wagons. The aim is to reduce long-distance road transport and improve intermodal freight connections between southern Spain and major inland logistics hubs. Adif will modify 34 tunnels , 104 overpasses and 18 metal bridges between Algeciras and San Fernando de Henares. The works will also prepare parts of the corridor for future electrification. The project includes signalling upgrades, infrastructure improvements and the extension of 750-metre sidings at several stations. Adif will also strengthen sections of the Bobadilla-Algeciras line to improve reliability and increase capacity. Once completed, the corridor will support freight moving between Morocco and mainland Europe through the Strait of Gibraltar. Adif plans to launch two daily train services in each direction during the first phase before increasing capacity as demand grows. Construction will affect rail operations. Traffic between Algeciras and Venta de Cárdenas will be suspended from September 2026 until autumn 2027. Freight trains will use alternative routes during the works, while passenger services will operate under replacement arrangements. The project supports Spain’s strategy to expand rail freight and reduce emissions. It will also strengthen the role of the Port of Algeciras as one of Europe’s main gateways for ro-ro and intermodal cargo.
