News 10 Jul, 2014 Ukraine - Closure of Sea Ports in Crimea Further to the recent news article “ Ukraine - New Legislation Affecting Vessels Arriving from Ports in Crimea ”, Club correspondents Dias Marine Consulting PC, Odessa have advised that the Ukrainian government has introduced legislation to shut down its port administrations in Crimea.  The new legislation is expected to enter into force on 15 July 2014 following which the Ukrainian government will consider the Crimean sea ports of Kerch, Theodosia, Sevastopol, Yalta and Evpatoria to be closed to international shipping. It is currently unclear what action may be taken against vessels which breach the new legislation and call at a port in Ukraine at a later date. However, it is believed that the potential penalties may include significant fines, detention and even confiscation of the vessel. The consequences for crew members may include fines, deportation or imprisonment. Should there be a pressing need for an entered vessel to call at a port in Crimea, and if it is possible that it may also visit a port in Ukraine at a later date, the Managers should be contacted for the latest advice before the vessel enters Crimean waters.
