UK-based utility SSE and its consortium partners have confirmed moving forward with the 2GW offshore wind farm in the Netherlands. The project, located in the IJmuiden Ver wind farm zone, is expected to reach a final investment decision by late 2025, and the wind farm commissioned by the end of the decade. In June, the Dutch government awarded permits for offshore wind farm development of 2 GW each to Nordzeker consortium comprising SSE, Dutch pension fund ABP and its asset manager APG and to Zeevonk joint venture between Swedish utility Vattenfall and fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. SSE consortium will enter into the 40-year lease period for the Alpha site for an annual payment of around €1m ($1.1m). As part of the deal, a performance bond has also been posted which is linked to on-time delivery of the wind farm, while the €20m cost of an environmental impact assessment completed by Dutch authorities will be reimbursed. The IJmuiden Ver tender is SSE’s first seabed award in the Dutch offshore wind market, where 21GW of offshore wind is expected to be tendered by 2032.
