Japanese shipping line Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has sealed a deal to take on a methanol dual-fuel ultramax bulk carrier on charter next year. NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers will charter in a newbuild 65,700 dwt unit, which compatriot owner Kambara Kisen currently has under construction at the go-to yard for methanol-fuelled bulkers Tsuneishi Shipbuilding. The 200-m-long ship will be the first methanol-fuelled bulk carrier operated by NYK once delivered in spring 2025. The vessel has a dual-fuel main engine that can use both methanol and fuel oil. The primary fuels are expected to be bio-methanol and e-methanol, produced using hydrogen derived from renewable energy sources and recovered carbon dioxide, NYK said.
