Effective prevention depends on proper maintenance, good sealing arrangements and reliable testing of hatch covers prior to loading. While several methods are used to evaluate weathertightness of the hatch covers, Ultrasonic Testing (UST) is widely regarded as the most accurate and reliable. It is a non invasive method accepted by classification societies and P&I clubs. UST enables early identification of weaknesses and targeted remedial action, making it the most effective means of ensuring hatch cover weathertight integrity.
