Ocean Network Express (ONE) and classification society ClassNK have launched a joint research project to measure the effectiveness of roll damping tanks on large container ships. ONE will provide operational data collected onboard its vessels. ClassNK will analyse the information alongside numerical simulations to assess how effectively the systems reduce rolling under actual operating and sea conditions. The research aims to establish a practical method for evaluating roll damping tanks during full-scale operations. The partners expect the findings to support safer vessel operations, improved cargo protection and greater transit reliability. How roll damping tanks reduce vessel movement Roll damping tanks reduce a ship’s rolling motion through the controlled movement of liquid inside a specially designed tank. The technology has long been used on passenger ships, research vessels and other specialised ships. However, its application aboard container vessels has increased in recent years. For container ships, reducing rolling can improve cargo safety and support more efficient stowage. It may also help carriers protect loading capacity during voyages exposed to challenging sea conditions. Pictured above: Scale-model testing of RDTs. Moving beyond simulations like this, ONE and ClassNK are now utilizing operational data from active containerships to prove RDT effectiveness under actual sea conditions. “We are pleased to work with ONE to verify the effectiveness of RDTs based on data obtained from actual vessel operations,” said Kumi Miyashita, Corporate Officer at ClassNK. Miyashita added that combining full-scale measurements with numerical analysis could provide a reliable basis for assessing performance under real operating conditions. Masaharu Urabe, Vice President of Global Vessel Operations at ONE, said the project would combine the carrier’s operational data with ClassNK’s technical analysis. “We believe that the knowledge gained through this research will fur
