Everllence has completed the factory acceptance test (FAT) of its first ammonia-burning engine built by licensee HHI-EMD, marking a major step toward the commercial rollout of ammonia propulsion. The dual-fuel B&W 6G60ME-LGIA engine is destined for a vessel under construction for Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, with delivery of the first very large ammonia xarriers (VLACs) scheduled from October 2026. These ships are set to become the first globally to operate with the new ammonia engine. The successful FAT confirms the engine meets required specifications following rigorous testing, paving the way for onboard installation. “This is a huge milestone that places our ammonia engine on the very brink of its commercial debut,” said Ole Pyndt Hansen, head of two-stroke R&D at Everllence. “Bringing new fuels to market is not just innovation – it’s imperative for zero-carbon shipping.” The ME-LGIA builds on the company’s existing dual-fuel engine platform, incorporating additional safety systems tailored to ammonia, including enhanced containment, ventilation and double-walled piping. The unit also features high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HPSCR) technology.
