Norwegian energy giant Equinor halted production from its Gullfaks C platform on Sunday due to an incident at one of its wells. As a safety measure, some workers were evacuated from the North Sea platform, located off the coast of Norway. This was done to ensure the crew’s safety in case the situation with the well turned for the worse. The spokesperson for the company told several media outlets that the source of the well control incident was yet unknown and that it remains to be seen when production from the platform would be restarted but that the situation was ‘stable’. The Gullfaks area has two more platforms – Gullfaks A and Gullfaks B – and their operations continued as usual. Due to the shutdown, the overall gas production capacity at the Gullfaks field will be reduced on Monday by 6.6m cubic meters per day. The three large Gullfaks production platforms came on stream between 1986 and 1989. The produced oil is transferred onto loading buoys on the field, while the gas is transported by pipeline for processing at the gas facility at Kårstø near Stavanger. From there, the gas is routed for export. Gullfaks A is also used to store and ship stable crude oil from the Vigdis, Visund, and Snorre fields. Oil and gas from Gullfaks B are transferred to A and C for processing, storage and export. Gullfaks C receives and processes oil from the Tordis field while satellite fields Gullfaks South, Rimfaks, Skinfaks, and Gullveig are developed utilising subsea wells that are remote-operated from the Gullfaks A and C platforms. Equinor is the field operator and holds a 51% stake while compatriot Petoro owns a 30% share.
