Finnish wind propulsion firm Norsepower has teamed up with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Equipment (CHIC) to ramp up production and global deployment of its rotor sails. The long-term deal moves beyond the companies’ initial memorandum of understanding, covering production, sales, installation, service, and joint engineering development. Norsepower brings its rotor sail tech and control systems, while CHIC brings heavy manufacturing muscle and a worldwide service network. “Shipowners are hungry for practical ways to cut fuel and emissions,” said Heikki Pöntynen, Norsepower CEO. “Partnering with CHIC gives us the production firepower to meet that demand and scale rotor sails fast.” CHIC’s general manager added: “Norsepower has the proven tech, we have the resources. Together, we can deliver reliable wind propulsion solutions to fleets worldwide and support the industry’s decarbonization goals.” The move also fits a wider trend emerging across the wind-assist sector, with European technology developers increasingly turning to Chinese yards and manufacturers to scale up.
