HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Bureau Veritas Advance Safety and Performance in New LCO₂ and LNG Carrier Designs Home News HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Bureau Veritas Advance Safety and Performance in New LCO₂ and LNG Carrier Designs Sep. 11 2025 LinkedIn Twitter Facebook share HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd (HD HHI) and Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) have successfully concluded two Joint Development Projects (JDPs) for the development of the designs of a 40K LCO₂ Carrier with 3 cargo holds and a 200K LNG Carrier with 3 cargo tanks respectively.HD HHI’s proprietary hull designs were meticulously developed to anticipate and meet the future demands of both the LCO₂ and LNG markets. By optimizing hull performance and maximizing cargo tank capacity, the new concepts deliver improved design efficiency and production advantages compared with existing 40K LCO₂ and 200K LNG carrier designs.These collaborations represent significant milestones in the long-standing partnership between HD HHI and BV, showcasing their combined expertise in advancing next-generation carrier technology.Throughout the projects, HHI prepared the development of Hull Key Drawings in compliance with BV’s rules requirements and relevant regulations. Subsequently, HD HHI and BV agreed to jointly participate to the development of these new designs of vessels to secure structural reliability and obtain Approval in Principle.BV carried out comprehensive verification processes on the drawings provided by HHI. For the 40K LCO₂ Carrier, this included 2D local scantling analyses covering hull girder longitudinal strength as well as the yielding and buckling of longitudinal members and transverse bulkheads. For the 200K LNG Carrier, BV conducted 2D local scantling analyses in addition to 3D Cargo Hold Finite Element Analysis to verify the strength of primary supporting members.Hong-Ryeul Ryu, CTO of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., said: “Through these JDPs , these two new gas carrier designs represent major steps forward in sustainable shipping.
