Ship strikes are a major threat to whale conservation. BIMCO’s new global ship strike mitigation resource helps the industry reduce collisions. This new webpage, exclusively for members, includes the whale species of each region, best practices in reporting and how to receive sighting alerts. Updated mandatory and voluntary measures around the world, voyage planning tools and general advice are made easily available. Ship strikes (a collision between a ship and a marine mammal) have become one of the leading causes of whale mortality globally. Recognising the significance of this problem, we are delighted to add a new resource to complement our existing members information. Our new webpage accessed via “My BIMCO” is designed to assist members in preventing and reducing ship strikes- offering a clear and comprehensive view on whale conservation measures relevant to the maritime industry. There are several mandatory and voluntary measures in place across the globe designed to mitigate these harmful and potentially fatal strikes. This resource brings together all the necessary information on whale conservation alongside advice on operational and compliance practices. It builds on and updates the information contained with the WSC Whale Chart, which we still recommend is kept onboard, incorporating background information on the species of each region and detailed descriptions of both mandatory and voluntary measures to reduce whale strikes. Members can find the dates or duration of each measure as well as how to implement them efficiently. Maps and coordinates are also available but should only be used as a guidance and not for navigational purposes. General guidance on how to report sightings or incidents is provided, along with the region- or country-specific protocols to support data-driven protection strategies.
