Belgian gas shipping and infrastructure group Exmar has been selected by Cedar LNG Partners to provide marine and operational services for the project’s floating liquefied natural gas unit. Under the agreement, the Antwerp-based owner will deliver marine operations and maintenance services for the FLNG vessel megúgu, which is currently under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries in South Korea. Exmar’s scope also includes developing operating procedures for the unit and supporting the project through the construction and pre-operations phases. Cedar LNG is being developed by Cedar LNG Partners, a joint venture majority-owned by the Haisla Nation alongside Pembina Pipeline Corporation. The project is described as the world’s first Indigenous majority-owned LNG facility and is designed to be powered by renewable electricity. Located in Kitimat, British Columbia, within the traditional territory of the Haisla Nation, the project will use the FLNG unit with a nameplate capacity of 3.3m tonnes per annum. Exmar chief executive Carl-Antoine Saverys said the group was proud to be selected as a strategic partner on what he described as a first-of-its-kind FLNG development. He added that Exmar’s track record in safe and reliable operations was a key factor in Cedar’s decision. The Cedar LNG project carries an estimated price tag of about $4bn and is expected to enter service in late 2028. Once operational, the facility will be powered by electricity from BC Hydro, positioning it among the lowest-emission LNG export projects globally.
