RBI leaves interest rates unchanged, flags risks from Iran disruptions in World Economy News 09/04/2026 The Reserve Bank of India left interest rates unchanged as widely expected on Wednesday, with Governor Sanjay Malhotra flagging potential risks to the Indian economy from disruptions caused by the war in the Middle East. The RBI left its at 5.25% as expected. Speaking in a post-meeting livestream, Governor Malhotra noted that global geopolitical uncertainty had risen sharply in recent months, and that the Iran conflict stood to further disrupt global growth. Malhotra noted that while the U.S. and Iran did announce a ceasefire, lingering disruptions in energy, shipping, and insurance markets were likely to impact growth. “Risks to the baseline projections are tilted to the downside, with uncertainty remaining elevated due to the ongoing West Asia conflict,” Malhotra said in a livestream. He noted that the passthrough of higher global energy prices had resulted in increases in some fuel items, but that inflation still remained muted in recent months. Malhotra said the RBI expects Indian inflation to hit 4.6% in fiscal 2027 and growth to rise to 6.9%. This compares to fiscal 2026 CPI projections of 2.6% and GDP of 6.8%. The central bank was seen intervening repeatedly in foreign exchange markets through late-March and early-April, as it sought to dampen losses in the rupee. The Indian currency hit a series of record lows against the dollar as markets feared a greater impact on the Indian economy from disruptions in energy imports. The Indian economy is viewed as vulnerable to disruptions caused by the Iran war, given that the country depends heavily on energy imports through the Strait of Hormuz. Higher energy prices could factor into steeper Indian inflation in the coming months, especially in the face of prolonged supply disruptions.
