Kamei Corporation on Thursday (21 May) announced that it has conducted Japan’s first ship-to-ship bunkering operation of 100% HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil at Keihin Port. The operation was part of a demonstration project using Japan’s biofuel firm Euglena’s brand called Susteo. Susteo is a next-generation biodiesel fuel brand that uses Used Cooking Oil (UCO) and other materials as feedstocks. “As it is a drop-in type fuel that can be used as is with existing marine diesel engines and fuel supply infrastructure, it is expected to be a next-generation fuel that will contribute to the decarbonisation of the transportation and port sectors,” Kamei said. Since HVO is classified as a Class II petroleum product, the company said it can be transported by conventional fuel supply vessels. In collaboration with Euglena Co., Ltd., Kamei said it will use this demonstration project to build a stable supply system for Susteo and build on operational know-how, while also identifying challenges and conducting technical verification for future full-scale deployment.   Photo credit: Kamei Corporation Published: 25 May, 2026
