Trump preparing to nominate Kevin Warsh as next Fed Chair- reports in World Economy News 30/01/2026 U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing to nominate former Federal Reserve governor Kevin Warsh to succeed Jerome Powell at the head of the central bank, several reports showed on Thursday evening. The reports came shortly after Trump told reporters at a Washington event that he will announce his nomination for Powell’s successor on Friday morning. “A lot of people think that this is somebody that could have been there a few years ago,” Trump said. “It’s going to be somebody that is very respected, somebody that’s known to everybody in the financial world.” Reports from Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, and the Financial Times showed Trump was preparing to nominate Warsh as the next Fed Chair. The reports showed Warsh pipping top White House advisor Kevin Hassett for the role. Trump’s comments on Friday also suggest that Warsh will be his pick, given that the former Fed governor had lost out to Powell for the top Fed role in 2017, during Trump’s first presidential term. Warsh has since spent years publicly criticizing the Fed. He was seen aligning himself closely with Trump’s views over the past year that the central bank should cut interest rates aggressively. The president was seen souring on Powell, having publicly insulted the Fed Chair on several occasions for not cutting interest rates as sharply as he demanded. But this sparked concerns over the central bank’s independence– concerns which came to a head earlier in January when Powell claimed a criminal investigation into the central bank’s renovation project was politically motivated. Powell, at the Fed’s policy meeting earlier this week, also urged his successor to “stay out of elected politics.” The Fed left interest rates unchanged as widely expected on Wednesday.
