Evergreen Marine is operating around 58,000 reefer containers equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology as it expands its smart cold chain capabilities. The carrier highlighted its reefer operations during Asia Fruit Logistica 2026 in Hong Kong. Evergreen said its technology allows the condition of refrigerated cargo to be monitored throughout its journey. Real-time monitoring across reefer fleet Evergreen’s IoT-enabled containers can transmit information on location, temperature, humidity and operating status in real time. The system can issue alerts when it detects temperature deviations, unauthorized door openings or equipment problems. This allows personnel to assess potential problems and respond before they lead to wider cold chain disruptions. Evergreen is also using data analytics to monitor the condition of reefer equipment. Remote diagnostics can help identify potential problems before equipment fails. The carrier said this supports a shift from reactive maintenance towards preventive action. Controlled atmosphere technology supports fresh produce Evergreen also offers Controlled Atmosphere (CA) reefer services for sensitive fresh produce. The technology regulates oxygen and carbon dioxide levels inside containers. This can slow ripening and deterioration during longer journeys. Evergreen highlighted bananas, avocados and grapes among the products that can benefit from the technology. The carrier said CA technology can reduce spoilage while helping produce maintain its quality during transportation. Evergreen targets lower reefer energy consumption Evergreen is also introducing more energy-efficient equipment across its latest reefer containers. New units are progressively adopting variable-speed compressors that adjust their operation according to cooling requirements. The technology is designed to reduce energy consumption while maintaining the required conditions inside the container. Evergreen said it will continue combining smart reefer
