Image Credit: ClassNK Japanese classification society ClassNK has released an updated edition of its guidelines for liquefied hydrogen carriers, incorporating the latest IMO interim safety recommendations. The Guidelines for Liquefied Hydrogen Carriers (Edition 3.1) incorporate the Revised Interim Recommendations for Carriage of Liquefied Hydrogen in Bulk adopted by the IMO Maritime Safety Committee in 2026 , it said in an emailed statement on Thursday .  The update introduces safety requirements for membrane-type cargo containment systems using vacuum insulation, including guidance on monitoring devices, pressure control equipment and emergency response. ClassNK has also updated guidance on materials and welding for hydrogen equipment, covering risks including low-temperature embrittlement, hydrogen embrittlement and hydrogen attack. The guidelines are intended to help shipyards, designers, shipowners and other stakeholders conduct design studies and safety assessments for liquefied hydrogen carriers. The revision also draws on ClassNK's experience from demonstration vessels and research and development projects.
