As shipping moves towards lower carbon operations, biofuels are increasingly used as “drop in” alternatives to conventional marine fuels. Since 2019, Skuld has gained practical experience through member inquiries, vessel trials and operational cases, highlighting both the potential benefits and the importance of fuel quality, testing and supplier vetting. This article summarises key lessons learned from the use of different biofuel types and their operational impact on ship engines.
