File Image / Pixabay Container shipping charter rates remain firm on strong demand and limited vessel supply, while shipping lines await greater clarity on the Strait of Hormuz , according to sector specialist Alphaliner . Demand for tonnage continues to outstrip supply across most vessel sizes, particularly above 3,000 TEUs where the shortage of available ships remains acute, it said in an emailed report on Tuesday . While the lack of prompt tonnage has limited fixing activity, charter rates for larger vessels remain at healthy levels. Below 3,000 TEUs , slightly greater vessel availability has resulted in more fixtures, but rates remain robust. Non-operating owners are still securing charter periods of up to 24 months for modern ships. Cargo demand is also supporting the market. An early peak season has pushed freight rates higher, with the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index rising for eight consecutive weeks to its highest level since August 2024 . Although the framework peace agreement between the US and Iran has improved sentiment, uncertainty remains over transit arrangements through the Strait of Hormuz . Most container shipping lines are expected to wait for greater clarity before restoring Gulf services or adjusting logistics networks, limiting any immediate impact on charter demand.
