Image Credit: WinGD WinGD has secured an order for four engines capable of running on both methanol and ethanol for Polaris Shipping ’s Newcastlemax newbuilds. The four 210,000 - DWT vessels are being built by Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry in China and are scheduled for delivery in 2031 , WinGD said in an emailed update on Thursday . The vessels will be powered by WinGD’s dual-fuel engines, giving Polaris flexibility to switch between methanol and ethanol depending on fuel availability, pricing and regulatory requirements. “Our alcohol-fuel engine platform enables ships to operate on either ethanol or methanol,” Carmelo Cartalemi , Head of Strategic Marketing at WinGD, said. Polaris said the dual-fuel capability would allow its charterers greater choice in how the vessels are operated as fuel economics and availability change. WinGD said the order adds to its alternative-fuel engine portfolio, which includes LNG, methanol, ethanol and ammonia.
