Image Credit: BV K Shipbuilding , wind propulsion firm Bound4blue and classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) have signed a joint development project to design a 74,000 DWT LR1 tanker equipped with wind propulsion technology. The partners will assess the integration of a wind-assisted propulsion system to improve energy efficiency, lower bunker consumption and emissions, BV said in a statement on its website on Tuesday . South Korea ’s K Shipbuilding will lead vessel design and integration work, while Bound4blue will provide wind propulsion expertise. BV will conduct design review and verification activities, with an approval in principle (AiP) planned upon successful completion of the project. The study will evaluate vessel stability, structural integrity, operational safety and system performance, supporting the development of commercially viable low-emission tanker designs. Wind propulsion system is increasingly becoming popular among shipowners.
