Italian major Eni has reached the final investment decision (FID) to develop the Coral North FLNG project, deepwater offshore Cabo Delgado, north of Mozambique. The project will put into production the gas volumes from the northern part of Area 4’s Coral gas reservoir, in the Rovuma basin, through an FLNG unit. The project will be developed by an Eni-led joint venture. The partners in the project are CNPC, Kogas, ENH, and ADNOC’s subsidiary XRG. Coral North, set to be completed in 2028, is Eni’s second development in Mozambique and the second large-scale FLNG delivered in ultra-deep waters worldwide, with Coral South, which has been in production since 2022, being the first. With a production liquefaction capacity of 3.6 mtpa, the newly built Coral North FLNG and its predecessor Coral South will bring Mozambique’s overall LNG production to over 7 mtpa, making the country the third-largest LNG producer in Africa. “Coral North will more than double the benefits for the country. It is projected to generate $23bn in tax revenues, create even more jobs, increase national suppliers and assign $3bn in contracts to local companies,” said Claudio Descalzi, Eni CEO. Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006.
