Two vessels classed by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) have joined the Indian Navy. They were commissioned during a ceremony attended by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 21 June 2026. INS Agray and INS Sanshodhak were among three naval platforms inducted into service. Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd. (GRSE) built both vessels under IRS Naval Rules. INS Agray is an Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC). It strengthens the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare and coastal surveillance capabilities. The vessel features advanced underwater detection and engagement systems. INS Sanshodhak is a Survey Vessel (Large). It carries advanced hydrographic survey equipment. The vessel will support nautical charting, oceanographic research and maritime domain awareness. It will also enhance safe navigation and maritime operations. IRS said the commissioning highlights the progress of India’s indigenous naval shipbuilding programme. It also reflects strong cooperation between the Indian Navy, Indian shipyards and the country’s maritime industry. “We are honoured that two of the three naval platforms inducted in the presence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister were classed by IRS,” said Commander K.K. Dhawan of IRS. He said the vessels demonstrate India’s growing shipbuilding capabilities. He added that IRS will continue supporting the Indian Navy and Indian shipyards through classification and technical assurance services.
