Image Credit: Sogestran Compagnie Maritime Nantaise (MN) , a subsidiary of Sogestran Group , has ordered a new wind-assisted RoRo vessel to transport cargo for the space industry. The vessel is expected to enter service by 2030 and will support MN’s long-term partnership with Avio , Sogestran said in a statement on its website on Wednesday .  It will transport Vega-C launch vehicles between Europe and the Guiana Space Centre , as well as satellites, strategic equipment and oversized components for the Ariane 6 programme when required. The vessel will feature a large main RoRo deck, a dedicated environmentally controlled compartment for space-related cargo and a flexible open deck. Its propulsion system will combine conventional mechanical propulsion with three automated OceanWings rigid sails. The vessel will also use an optimised hull design, weather routing, automation and biofuel compatibility to reduce its environmental footprint. “This new vessel marks another milestone in the development of our activities serving the European space industry,” Marc-Antoine Girardet , president of the Maritime Division of Sogestran Group, said. The shipbuilding contract was signed with Guangzhou Shipyard International on August 21 following technical evaluations, site visits and negotiations.
