Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is set to receive up to US$70 million in financing from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to develop shore power infrastructure across its terminals in India. The IFC financing will support capital expenditure for the project, which is planned to be implemented in two phases over the next two to three years. IFC’s Board approved a US$70 million investment for the project on 5 August 2026. The financing remains listed as pending signing in IFC’s latest project disclosure. Shore power planned across JNPA terminals The project will allow vessels at berth to connect to electricity supplied from shore instead of operating their auxiliary diesel engines. Infrastructure will include 33kV substations, cable systems, e-houses, frequency converters and shore connection points at multiple berths. According to IFC, JNPA plans to implement the infrastructure across its terminals in phases. The first phase will focus on one container terminal. The second phase will extend the infrastructure to the remaining terminals. JNPA operates five container terminals through public-private partnership concessions and has total container capacity of approximately 10.4 million TEUs. Completion targeted for January 2028 JNPA separately confirms that it is implementing shore power across all its terminals except the liquid cargo terminal. The port has completed the project’s Detailed Project Report, while a project monitoring consultancy provider is already in place. JNPA currently expects the wider shore power programme to be completed by January 2028. The port already provides shore power to port craft, with the existing facility expanded in August 2021 to accommodate additional vessels. The new infrastructure will significantly expand that capability, allowing ocean-going vessels to use land-based electricity while alongside. IFC said the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants such as sulphur ox
