The Greek navy’s bid to stop ship-to-ship (STS) transfers of Russian oil off Kalamata has worked, albeit in the constant game of tanker whack-a-mole some of these operations have merely transferred some 300 km east towards the island of Chios. Israeli data firm Windward has detected a new STS hub in the Aegean Sea in between Lesbos and Chios. It comes after STS operations off previous Russian tanker hotspot, Kalamata, have ceased. Since May 1, citing military exercises, the Greek navy has put out of bounds an area in international waters southeast of the Peloponnese islands, six nautical miles off the coast of Laconia, a patch of water that has seen Russian-linked tankers dot the horizon over the past couple of years.
