South Korea’s Doosan Enerbility has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Siemens Gamesa and Equinor for cooperation on the Bandibuli floating offshore wind farm project off South Korea, otherwise known as Firefly. This collaboration aims to develop a 750MW floating offshore wind farm in Ulsan, utilising Siemens Gamesa’s 15MW large-scale wind turbines. The nacelles will be assembled and supplied from Doosan Enerbility’s Changwon wind power plant. The Firefly wind farm comprises two 75 sq km areas, 70 km off the coast. So far, Doosan has worked with 3.3MW, 5.5MW, and 8MW models. These will be the largest models it has worked on to date. This MoU builds on previous agreements with Siemens Gamesa, including a strategic cooperation MoU from June 2022 and a framework agreement for partnership signed in February 2023. “The partnership between Doosan and Siemens Gamesa is recognised as the most realistic and optimized cooperation model for accelerating the expansion of the domestic wind power market,” said Son Seung-woo, head of power service BG at Doosan Enerbility. Floating platforms allow turbines to be located in deeper waters with higher and more consistent wind speeds.
