Loss Prevention 19 Dec, 2025 Turkey - Environmental Pollution Fines: Updated for 2026 Emma Forbes-Gearey Loss Prevention Officer Turkish authorities have announced a 25.49% increase in fines for marine pollution, effective 1 January 2026. This adjustment, as reported by local sources, applies to all categories specified under Article 23 of the Environmental Code. Download PDF The revised tariffs apply to discharges of oil, dirty ballast, garbage, sewage, scrubber washwater, and other comparable pollutants. Fines are calculated based on gross tonnage, with increased rates imposed for hazardous substances, repeat violations, and corporate vessel ownership. Vessels may be detained until appropriate security is provided. Payment made within 30 days qualifies the vessel for a 25% reduction in the fine. Additional penalties are imposed for non-compliance with sulphur regulations stipulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
