New Greek outfit Carlova Maritime has made its first newbuilding move with an order for a VLCC at South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean. The Athens-based company has revealed a contract for one VLCC newbuild, with delivery expected in the fourth quarter of 2027. Launched earlier this year as the successor to the historic Samos Steamship, which traces its roots back to 1911, Carlova Maritime is led by Anthony Inglessis. The company has already taken over commercial and technical management of seven vessels from Samos—five tankers, including a VLCC, and two bulkers. The Hanwha deal also marks a shift from the Inglessis family’s long-standing preference for Japanese yards. Separately, a second Inglessis-linked venture, JHI Steamship, has also been set up and is run by John Inglessis.
