The Master and crew onboard need to ensure safe working arrangements for any work carried out at a height. Examples of tasks that are considered working at height can include maintenance on an open hatch or performing work on a ladder. Download PDF It should be noted that work carried out at a height should only be done when there is no other practicable alternative for the work to be completed. If an alternative exists, the alternative method should be used. If working at height is the only method available, then the responsible officer needs to ensure that the work is planned appropriately, risk assessments are performed, that a competent person with the required skills is carrying out the task, and that the job is under supervision. Our new video "Working at Heights" highlights the dangers that can occur when incorrect personal protective equipment is used and when procedures are not followed. The content defines working at height and the practical risk control measures to be used in order to reduce the risk of a fall.
