Repsol and Maersk have completed the first bioethanol bunkering operation at the Port of Barcelona. Repsol supplied 2,800 tonnes of bioethanol to the Antonia Maersk container vessel. The operation took place under commercial conditions. It is one of the first bioethanol bunkering operations in the Mediterranean. The companies said the project proves that the infrastructure, logistics and operational capabilities are ready to support alcohol-based marine fuels at scale. Bahía Candela, Repsol’s newest bunker vessel, carried out the fuel transfer. The vessel used its battery system during the operation. This enabled the bunkering to take place with zero local emissions inside the port. Repsol said the project strengthens its multi-energy strategy. The company continues to expand its portfolio of conventional, renewable and low-carbon marine fuels. “With this supply, we reaffirm our commitment to the decarbonization of maritime transport through solutions that are available today and ready to scale in the future,” said Juan Abascal, Executive Managing Director of Industrial Transformation and Circular Economy at Repsol. The operation also supports Maersk’s alternative fuel strategy. The carrier first tested ethanol in 2023 on the Laura Maersk. The vessel became the world’s first dual-fuel container ship capable of operating on methanol. It later completed voyages using 100% ethanol and ethanol-methanol blends. Maersk now operates 23 dual-fuel methanol container vessels. The trial on the 16,000-TEU Antonia Maersk will help the company evaluate ethanol on larger ships. “Following the successful ethanol trials conducted on Laura Maersk, this latest bunkering of Antonia Maersk marks another important step in our efforts to explore scalable low-emission fuel solutions,” said Emma Mazhari, Vice President of Energy Markets at Maersk.
