The Port of Valencia has welcomed Spain’s first offshore solar platform, a pioneering project developed by Spanish startup BlueNewables with the support of Naturgy. The platform, named Paiporta in honour of the Valencian municipality particularly affected by the DANA flooding of 2024, was built at the San Enrique shipyard in Vigo and will be positioned outside the southern breakwater of the Port of Valencia for its testing phase. The Paiporta platform is the first of two planned units, each with a capacity of 500 kW, for a combined total of 1 MW. The second unit is expected to arrive at the Port of Valencia by late summer to complete the installation. The technology incorporates an innovative catamaran-style design optimised for operation in open ocean environments, representing Spain’s first pre-commercial-scale floating solar power plant at sea. The project has received a grant from the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving as part of the RENMARINAS VALENCIAPORT programme, coordinated by the Port Authority of Valencia and funded through the European Union’s NextGeneration EU initiative. As part of the project, the Port Authority will create a testing platform for connecting, testing and feeding marine renewable energy demonstration systems into the power grids of the ports of Valencia and Sagunto, with the infrastructure to remain available for future use. The initiative also involves collaboration with EnerMarPort, which will install wave energy systems at the Port of Sagunto. The offshore solar platform forms part of Valenciaport’s broader strategy to advance the energy transition across its port model, consistent with the decarbonisation, clean energy and climate resilience priorities of the Valenciaport 2035 Strategic Plan and its Net Zero Emissions Plan. The project reinforces the Port of Valencia’s role as a hub for applied innovation in renewable energy technologies applicable to port and offshore environments. The po
