Unlike other commercially operated vessel types, passenger vessels often carry people on board who may be unfamiliar with the marine environment and vessel surroundings. Approximately 35% of passenger-related claims, notified to the Club, involve a slip or fall on board due to the passenger being unfamiliar with the ship’s motion or design. It is critical that owners and operators of vessels carrying passengers keep this in mind when developing and implementing procedures to identify and manage risks related to passengers whilst on board. To support our Members, this booklet has been prepared to assist and mitigate against the risk of future incidents. Although this booklet focuses on passenger vessels, some of the information may be practical and appropriate for yachts and any other vessels which are certified to carry passengers.
