EU Natural Gas Prices Bounce Back in Oil & Companies News 05/03/2026 European natural gas futures rose above €53 per megawatt-hour on Thursday, rebounding from a more than 8% decline in the previous session, after Russian President Putin warned that gas supplies to Europe could potentially be halted. Russian gas flows to Europe have already fallen substantially in recent years, and further reductions are expected from April 2026 through the end of 2027 due to the EU ban on Russian gas imports. This heightens risks to Europe’s energy balance, especially amid significant supply disruptions caused by the mounting conflict in the Middle East, with the world’s largest LNG plant in Qatar remaining offline and the Strait of Hormuz closed. Meanwhile, Iran denied that its intelligence ministry had reached out to the US to negotiate an end to the conflict, and doubts remain over whether either side is prepared to de-escalate. These developments come as EU gas storage levels remain tight, currently below 30% of capacity, around levels last seen in early 2022.
