Image Credits: Indian Navy India has added another indigenous warship to its fleet with the delivery of stealth frigate Mahendragiri to the Indian Navy. The vessel was handed over on April 30 at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai. Mahendragiri is the sixth ship of the Nilgiri-class frigates built under Project 17A and the fourth of this class constructed at Mazagon Dock. Officials said the delivery is an important step in India’s efforts to achieve self-reliance in warship design and construction. The Project 17A frigates are built as multi-mission warships that can deal with different types of threats at sea. Compared to the earlier Shivalik-class frigates, these ships come with better stealth features, improved survivability, and more advanced combat systems. The ship was designed by the Warship Design Bureau and supervised by the Warship Overseeing Team in Mumbai. It was built using an integrated construction method and delivered within the planned timeline. Mahendragiri is fitted with an upgraded weapon and sensor suite. It is designed to carry out anti-surface, anti-air, and anti-submarine operations. Image Credits: Indian Navy The ship is powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system, which uses both diesel engines and a gas turbine. These drive controllable pitch propellers on each shaft. It also has an Integrated Platform Management System to manage onboard functions. This is the sixth Project 17A ship delivered in less than 17 months since the first ship of the class, Nilgiri, was handed over in December 2024. Officials said this shows steady progress in the country’s shipbuilding capability. The project has around 75 per cent indigenous content. More than 200 MSMEs have contributed to its construction at Mazagon Dock. The project has created jobs for about 4,000 people directly and over 10,000 indirectly. Other ships in the same class have also been delivered recently. The stealth frigate Taragiri was commissioned into the Indian Navy on April 3. Another ship, Dunagiri, built at Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineers Limited in Kolkata, was delivered on March 30.
