Malaysia’s MISC has moved into the floating regasification space, lining up a newbuild FSRU at Samsung Heavy Industries to serve a long-term contract with Petronas Gas. The Bursa Malaysia-listed owner confirmed it had accepted a letter of award from Petronas Gas for the supply, operation and maintenance of an FSRU under a 20-year agreement, with operations expected to start in 2029. In parallel, MISC signed a shipbuilding contract with Samsung Heavy Industries for the construction of the unit, which is valued at about $330m. Separate disclosures by the South Korean yard put the deal at KRW484.8bn, with delivery scheduled by February 2029. The vessel will support Malaysia’s expanding LNG import infrastructure, including the planned third regasification terminal in Lumut, Perak, as demand grows for flexible gas supply options.MISC said the project would be executed through a wholly owned subsidiary, marking its first step into the FSRU segment after years focused on LNG carriers and floating storage units. The company stated that the move builds on its existing gas shipping experience while broadening its footprint in LNG infrastructure, an area seeing steady growth as countries look to secure supply through floating solutions.
