MMI Daily Iron Ore Index Report January 22 2026 in Chinese iron ore and steelmaking prices 22/01/2026 Today, iron ore prices turned from weak to strong, with the main contract I2605 closing at 786.5 yuan/ton, up 0.5% from the previous trading day. Spot prices rose by 2–5 yuan/ton compared to the previous trading day. Today, traders demonstrated moderate enthusiasm in offering prices, while steel mills replenished their inventories as needed. Overall, market sentiment remained relatively active. Industry data released today showed a significant decline in the apparent demand for the five major types of steel products, accompanied by an accumulation of finished product inventories at steel mills. This was primarily driven by widespread rain and snow across the country, coupled with the seasonal off-season of the industry, which led to a continued weakening of end-user demand and accelerated inventory accumulation. However, the continuous decline in ore prices this week has somewhat alleviated market pessimism. At the same time, steel mills have actively increased their procurement efforts to build up inventories ahead of the Spring Festival, providing support for iron ore prices and contributing to their modest upward trend.
