NORDEN has delivered the first verified maritime emissions reductions through the RSB Book & Claim registry in a pilot with Microsoft and the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). According to NORDEN, the transaction marks the first time a maritime carrier has issued and delivered verified emissions reductions through the RSB registry. Book & Claim targets shipping emissions The Book & Claim model allows companies to purchase verified emissions reductions linked to sustainable fuels without requiring those fuels to be used on their specific voyages. This means companies can address emissions from maritime transportation even when sustainable fuels are not physically available on the ships carrying their cargo. NORDEN, Microsoft and RSB have extended the RSB Book & Claim framework to maritime transport. The framework has previously been used in aviation. “This transaction demonstrates how Book & Claim can help bridge that gap,” said Anne Jensen, COO at NORDEN. She added that the model allows companies to invest in verified emissions reductions from maritime transport regardless of where the sustainable fuel is used.
